Companies Continue to Employ Frauds!

From the ‘Nurse of the Year’ who really isn’t a nurse (See Article), to the felon representing a government contractor (See Article); one would think employers across the nation would be lining up in masses to assure themselves that their employees are really who or what they say they are.  And while many employers do perform some type of simple background screening, in today’s climate, the “lets just get it done quickly and cheaply” mentality just isn’t good enough.

With the increased pressure being put on HR personnel to hire talent in a more cost effective and swift manner, an alarming number of companies are failing to take the recommended due diligence steps when recruiting.  This is one area of day-to-day business operations that should clearly not be an option.  By skipping crucial reference, employment and education checks, along with targeted criminal, credit, and DMV reports, many companies are opening themselves up to the risk of hiring someone that doesn’t have the skills that they say they have to do the job, or worse. The end results of these due diligence short cuts usually cost employers in more ways than one.

In a recent research poll of 1,000 small to large businesses, 25% reported suffering an incident with an employee because they had not checked their references properly. Of the 250 companies reporting an incident, over 10% were the victims of fraud or theft, and 15% claimed their corporate reputation was damaged.  To make matters worse, half of all the incidents reported led to the termination of the employee, which meant going back to square one in the recruitment process, starting the time and money clock all over again.

In addition, and even more embarrassing to the affected companies, was the fact that most seemed to be very clear in what would have helped them avoid the problems.  They were very much aware that thorough reference and employment checks, along with criminal, credit and education screenings should be a key part of their due diligence process, before making an offer to a potential employee.

An increasingly competitive job market is fueling the fire of the number of people that provide incorrect or false information on resumes and during the interview process. Even with the likes of the above-mentioned unlicensed nurse and felon government contractor being exposed, the trend of falsifying personal information is showing no signs of slowing down.

Every HR representative or hiring manager, who is a responsible professional, should hire the right company to perform reference checking and a careful extended evaluation of the candidate before making a decision.  Proper due diligence will pay off, even when under pressure to recruit quickly and cost effectively.  The time and cost investment of thorough reference and additional background checking will pay off many times over in the long term.  But, it can take just one misinformed hiring recommendation to cost your business dearly.
