Some States Require Background Checks to be Performed by Licensed Investigators

Doesn’t it seem like everybody and their brother is an expert at conducting background checks. I remember back in the mid 1990’s when the credit bureau TransUnion pulled the plug on all the investigators who were getting credit reports from their DOS database. I still remember my account number as P1804. A year later there was TransUnion suddenly in the background check business. What better way to get a jump on your competition than by eliminating, right? Of course TransUnion underestimated the power of legitimate investigators in that we would rise above the disconnection and get our credit reports legally through another vendor and subsequently hire a lobbyist to defend our rights in Washington, D.C.
Now, you have the payroll companies jumping into the background check business extolling that they have been doing it for over 20 years? We have been conducting background checks for 18 years and unless they acquired that knowledge through the acquisition of a company it is a little difficult for me to believe they have been doing it for 2 years, let alone 20.
A client recently sent me an email advertisement that she got from a payroll company. In a nutshell, here’s what this payroll company is trying to do; they are trying to water down the background check industry by offering cheap searches in the hopes of leveraging you into its payroll services. It’s not a novel marketing idea, but what happens is you suffer from the lack of quality work product, extended turnaround times and poor understanding of the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), which could tragically open your company to a lawsuit. The email advertisement extolled the 20 years of background check experience, the searches they have provided and how they propose to decrease costs. It is interesting to note that their email advertisement never mentioned anything about excellent customer service, fast turnaround times, quality work product or innovative technology.
