Why should you resist doing your own background checks?

We realize that the challenging economy has allowed companies to further examine their expenses in doing business.  Tragically some companies are attempting to do their employment background checks in-house.  Would you attempt to fix your Mercedes yourself?  In doing so, you void the warranty and may put other drivers at risk.  The same is true with your background checks.

Here are the 3 big reasons not to conduct your own background checks in-house:

1) Lawsuits:  Employment law and the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) are complex topics that really should only be interpreted or conducted by professionals such as your corporate attorney, Human Resource consultant and your licensed investigations firm that specializes in background checks.  The axiom, “When you represent yourself, you have a fool for a client.” is very true and can cost your company big dollars.

a) Reduce Employee Theft | FACT: Average cost per employee involved is $650

b) Control Frivolous Lawsuits | FACT: Average award per lawsuit is $7,500

c) Decrease Employee Turnover | FACT: Average cost of training an employee after 1 year is $32,000

d) Stop Resume Fraud | FACT: Average cost per employee is $32,000

e) Minimize Exposure to Negligent Hiring | FACT: Average cost per claim is $150,000

f) Decrease Workplace Violence | FACT: Average cost per incident is $1,000,000

2) Expertise:  GObackgrounds.com has been in business since 1991, we have the knowledge and expertise to help your company make an informed hiring decision.  Do you know the difference between a felony and a misdemeanor and whether or not you can consider an arrest or conviction that is beyond 7 years?

3) Time:  What is your time worth?  If you are a HR Manager your time is better spent managing people, not doing background checks to save a buck.  It is not worth your time, nor the potential lawsuit as illustrated in point number 1.

Doing your own background checks is a recipe for disaster.  You risk too much and gain very little.  Contact GObackgrounds.com at 1-888-GOBACK-1 for a free price analysis.  2008 statistical analysis compiled from the Bureau of National Affairs, U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Certified Fraud Examiners and Society of Human Resource Managers.
